Today’s sport

Months have passed, and so another edition of our school’s newspaper needs to be released. I have picked to do a little recap of what has happened in sport. Obviously, I’m not going to talk about every sports event or match or run, because we need to save paper and space on our school’s servers, and I think that others have some more important things to say.

I’m going to start with the Winter Olympics, which took place in Beijing. I think we can all say that this time Poland showed the world that we are the masters. Yes, we are, I know you now probably think “but we only won one medal” and that we were last, but firstly we shared the last place with Latvia and Estonia, and secondly sport isn’t just about winning or losing, it’s about how you do it, and we lost in a beautiful way. As a good journalist, I guess, I have to tell you about the more boring part, so who has won the most medals, it was Norway. They won the most medals and the most gold medals, but they didn’t show as much passion as the Poles and they probably cheated anyway.

Talking about Poland, I have to talk about the world cup. Well, our national team has a new coach and he seems to be a good pick, although we don’t actually know when or where, or even with whom we will play the qualifiers. I believe that it’s possible for us to qualify. The Polish players appear to be in form, our attacking trio is scoring almost every week, and I mean not just Lewandowski but Milik and Piątek too. Juventus fans started to love Szczęsny again, our midfield also looks pretty good. However, to qualify all of them need to be working as a team and that hasn’t been the easiest thing to do for the past couple of years.

Sadly, the war has started and it’s also present in sport. The Russian artistic gymnast, Ivan Kuliak wore a Z, the symbol of the invasion. Svetlana Khorkina posted the symbol on twitter but apart from these two actions the world of sport supports Ukraine. Russian teams have been banned from events organized by UEFA. Nikita Mazepin a formula 1 driver from Russia won’t be able to participate in the season as his contract has been terminated. Sportsmen and women have also shown that they are against war. Kamil Stoch for example wrote “Stop war, better fight in sport” on his skis. Ukrainian athlete, Vladyslav Heraskevych, prepared a sign that read “No war in Ukraine”. Shalke 04 decided that their sponsor, Gazprom, will no longer appear on their shirts, so as you can see SPORT IS AGAINST WAR.
