Mother’s Day around the world

In Poland, on 26th May, we celebrated Mother’s Day. We think about our mothers in a special way, we thank them for taking care of us and bringing us up. We often give them small gifts on this occasion. However, not all mums around the world celebrate on the same day, i.e., Mother's Day in Germany is celebrated on the second Sunday of May.


History of Mother’s Day

Currently, Mother's Day is celebrated in almost 140 countries around the world, while only in Poland is held on May 26th. The idea started in 1914. It was 1914 that Mother's Day was celebrated for the first time. It took place in Kraków.

How different countries celebrate Mother’s Day?

Italy: All the kids come together to express wishes to their mothers. On the second Sunday of May, children don’t allow their mothers to do housework.

Thailand: August 12th is a celebration not only for mothers, but Thai people also celebrate birthday of Queen Sirikit, Widow of King Bhumibolu Adulyadeju. She is considered as the mother of Entire Nation, thanks to her merits. Thai people decorate their homes with flags and portraits of the Queen. In the evening the candle lighting ceremony is held. According to the tradition, children should kneel in front of their mothers to express their love.
