As my friend, and many people before them, once said, “to be brave does not mean to have no fears of doing something, but it is doing something despite the fear that sometimes can paralyse us inside out.” Bravery is something different for every person. For some people, it is talking and speaking their minds, and for others it is standing up for themselves and for the people they love. Other people think it is brave when they try something new or when they do something that no one has done before them. They all are right. This is why the answer to the question is that there is no one answer, and many small things combine to form a brave human being.
1. Believing in yourself
Believing in yourself and in the fact that you can do something is the first step to being brave and facing your fears. If we logically acknowledge that we can do something and see our chances for success, then our fear can easily decrease. We can see, then, that the only thing blocking us from progress is us and it is only a matter of pushing ourselves forward. A good example of such a situation is when we are scared that the bar is set too high and that something would be too hard for us. In that case, it is crucial to remind ourselves of our strengths and our existing potential.
2. Acknowledging your fears
Another thing that can help us to behave bravely is acknowledging our fears and understanding them. Some of our fears are made up by our imagination and have nothing to do with reality, but others are there to warn us about the possibility of a real danger. Listening to our feelings and understanding the reason why they appear in a certain form can lead us to better self-understanding and can make us search for a strategy to modify our plan of action for it to be better for us and help us achieve our goals.
3. Doing things connected to your system of values
It is way easier to do something hard or brave when we believe it is the right thing to do. If the feeling that something must be done is greater than the fear of failure, then our inner motivation will help us cope with it in an approachable way. A good example of a situation like that is standing up for our values or the people who are important to us. It is sometimes very scary to disagree and to have a different opinion than everyone around, but to feel good in an environment of people, we must communicate and talk about what is important for us and what the things we do not accept or tolerate are.
To summarise, there is no one recipe to be brave and it requires a lot of work on oneself to do something brave. I have shared only three ideas that I think of as the most important from the whole sea of ideas existing. I hope I left you inspired to think about it on your own and find your recipe for how to strive to achieve your goals despite any fears you will meet on your way.
