Global warming

What is global warming? Global warming is a big problem for us and our planet, but we can take care of it and stop climate change. That is, if we don’t stop emitting CO2, global temperature will rise, and our planet will make itself warmer and warmer! For example, winter will be warm not cold, and there will be no snow.

You may ask what the cause of global warming is? The cause of it, is pretty simple, it is happening because of CO2. We cause that by emitting CO2 into the atmosphere!

It is bad for the Earth!

These are examples of things that cause global warming:

1. Factories

2. Cars

3. Buried fossil fuels

There are so many other things that are bad for climate :[

We need to change our life and be good for climate!

But there are things that we can do to protect our planet from climate change:

  • We can use public transport.

  • We can plant more trees and take care of them.

DO NOT CUT TREES FROM FORESTS.

Global warming is a huge problem, but now you know how to protect our planet from it.

We have one planet where we can live, so we need to take care of it.

GREENHOUSE GASES

by Alicja Tomala 4a PYP

Do you know what a greenhouse gas is?

I will tell you about it.

Greenhouse gases are gases in the earth's atmosphere that trap heat. During the day, the sun shines through the atmosphere, warming the earth's surface. At night the earth's surface cools, releasing heat back into the air. But some of the heat is trapped by the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

The reason they're called greenhouse gases is because they are just like a real glass-covered greenhouse.

Examples of greenhouse gases are:

  • carbon dioxide 82%

  • methane 9%

  • nitrous oxide 5%

  • others 4%

A little of greenhouse gas is good for environment. It keeps our planet in a comfortable temperature [14C].

But if there is too much of these gases, it is harmful to people and the planet Earth.

OCEANIC SPONGE

 by Ewa Przybysz 4b PYP

Do you know that when there is too much CO2 in the air, the sea starts soaking up the extra CO2 like a gigantic sponge!

Oceans keep the planet’s CO2 levels in balance; it is called equilibrium. The problem now is that because of too much CO2 in our atmosphere from burning fossil fuels, the oceans and the atmosphere are getting warmer.

To keep nutrients in the ocean moving around, the waters need to mix together. But warmer surface waters don’t mix well with cold deep waters. It has to do with both temperature and with density of the ocean water. When ocean waters have different temperatures and densities, stratification occurs. This warmer water is not good for plankton [the microscopic plants that are the basis for all ocean life]. Another very important fact about global warming is that if CO2 emissions continue to rise, the ocean will be too warm to take all the CO2 from the atmosphere. And we will have a very BIG PROBLEM!!

Our planet is in trouble!!!

By Julian Banaszewski 4a PYP

It’s hard for people to stop burning fossil fuels. Carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere of our planet. It traps sun rays in the atmosphere and as a result the temperature is rising.

Where do those fossil fuels come from?

A large number of dead sea algae and other microorganisms were buried under mud and rock. Under the huge pressure and heat for millions of years they changed to a black mass called petroleum.

The hard coal and lignite come from fallen trees and dead plants that were buried deep in the ground without oxygen, and they under heat and pressure were changed into peat. After some time, it changed to lignite and then to hard coal.

People burn coal to produce energy, but its side effect is carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere.

As a result, the layer of greenhouse gases is getting thicker, and sun rays are trapped in the atmosphere. It causes climate getting warmer.

In some southern countries, there is less rainfall and drought and, therefore, it is more difficult to produce food!!!

In some norther countries glaciers are melting!!!
