Gaius Julius Caesar and the Roman Empire

In this essay I will write about Gaius Julius Caesar who was a leader of ancient Rome and renewed and completed the country, which was later known as the Roman Empire. He expanded its reaches across the globe and established its imperial system. He is an extremely important person in the aspect of history as he changed the most dominant empire in the world. Without him our world would be very different from the one we live in today.

Caesar was born in a family of Roman aristocrats. When he was 16 his father, who carried the same name as him, died in Asia. Caesar really wanted to establish alliances with the countries’ nobility. He married 3 times, his first being Cornelia in 84 B.C, with whom he had a daughter named Julia in 76 B.C. Cornelia died in 69 B.C. Then he married Pompeii, who was the granddaughter of Sulla, the man who later banished him from Rome. Their marriage lasted 5 years and ended in 67 B.C producing no offspring. In 59 B.C he wedded with Calpurnia with whom he remained for the rest of his life. He also had a child with Queen Cleopatra the VII, the queen of Egypt, the child’s name was Caesarian.

His political career began when Sulla died. Caesar started as a prosecuting advocate. During his travels he was kidnapped by pirates and he used his negotiation skills to convince the pirates to raise his ransom, which allowed the Roman naval to perform an attack on the pirates rescuing Caesar and later executing his captors. In 74 B.C he gathered a private army and fought Mithradates the VI, the King of Pontus, who declared war on Rome. By using his own private army to defend Rome he proved that he cared about the welfare of the city. In 68 B.C he was elected a quaestor after forming an alliance with Gaius Pompey Magnus. He also served in many other key government positions. In 61 B.C Caesar served in Spain while maintaining his alliance with Magnus which proved to be crucial in his succession of being elected as Consul, one of the most powerful positions in Rome. As Julius Caesars power grew, Pompey, Caesar’s political partner grew jealous of Caesar’s power and adoration, which caused a civil war.

The war ended when Caesar finally caught up to Pompey after chasing him through Syria and Spain. Pompey died in Egypt where he was immediately executed as the Egyptians favored Caesar due to his many continuous victories. Upon his triumphant return to Rome, Caesar was worshipped as the father of his country and made a dictator for the rest of his life. Unfortunately, Caesar was executed only one year later. He was killed by his political rivals on the 15th of March 44 B.C.

In conclusion, Caesar had a life full of amazing accomplishments like being nearly flawless in battle and managing to rise to the very top from a mediocre starting point. He had a huge impact on the history of the world, maybe except for the Americas. He ruled in Syria, Rome, Spain, Gaul (contemporary France and Belgium) and Egypt, which was the most powerful empire in Africa. His accomplishments where immediately noticed by the Roman Empire, and he quickly became a martyr. Two years after his death, Caesar became the first Roman to be deified. The Senate also gave him the title “The Divine Julius”
