Claude Monet: A Pioneer of Impressionism

Claude Monet was a well-known person in the art world and one of the key founders of the Impressionist movement. He was born on November 14, 1840, in Paris, France. Monet spent his childhood in Le Havre, where his father worked as a grocer. He spent his early years drawing caricatures of his friends which (later turned into paintings of nature) sparked his love for painting. In order to capture the transitory effects of natural lighting, Monet frequently painted en plein air (outdoors) throughout his life. This demonstrated his intense love for capturing the essence of nature and light in his works. His unconventional artistic methods upended accepted practices and ushered in a new period in painting.

"Impression, Sunrise" (1872) and "Water Lilies and Japanese Bridge" (1899) are two of Monet's most well-known pieces. In order to convey the shimmering reflections on the sea, "Impression, Sunrise" uses free brushstrokes and a lively color scheme to depict a hazy sunrise over the port of Le Havre. What impressed me the most about this artwork was the way Monet portrayed this scene in such a little number of strokes. This work of art, which gave the term "Impressionism" to the entire movement, is a prime example of Monet's skill at capturing fleeting moments and the constantly shifting quality of light. The painting “Water lilies and Japanese Bridge” depicts a river with more than thirty water lilies drifting around in it and over the river there is a beautiful Japanese style bridge. The attention to detail really impresses me, since this is a small painting which doesn’t give too much space for such a thing, yet Monet still does it proving why he was one of the best painters in the world.

In order to depict the transient perceptions of light and atmosphere, Monet used fragmented brushstrokes and a vivid palette in his paintings. He frequently painted outside, capturing the influence of the sun's rays on the canvas with rapid, loose brushstrokes. Generations of painters have been influenced by Monet's revolutionary techniques and attention to depicting the constantly changing aspects of nature. Impressionism is one of my favourite styles because it really presents the real beauty of whatever the painting is trying to convey.
