More and more young people in many cities in Poland have been raising awareness about cigarette butts pollution. They spot the cigarette butts by circling them with colourful chalk that attracts attention of the passersby.
The whole action was started by Dr. Patrick Perrigue, who comes from California but lives in Poznań, Poland. He noticed an enormous amount of trash on the streest while he walked his dog every day. He was worried that his dog may harm himself by stumping on some glass or eating the cigarette butts. He started to make circles with chalk around each cigarette butt left on the street. This helps the cleaners to find the butts and show to the smokers how much trash they leave behind.
Cigarette butts are not cotton but cellulose acetate, a plastic material that degrades over the years and destroys the environment. Scientists proved that butts are one of the biggest pollutant harming the environment.
We hope that after this initiative each smoker will think twice before he throws a cigarette butt on the street. Maybe some of them will quit smoking?
