Recently during my weekend, I have managed to watch Cars 2. It is a breathtaking animated detective movie intertwined with racing, directed by John Lasseter, who is well known for working with Pixar. The movie was fairly successful in its times, especially considering it is a movie aimed for children. Personally, I really enjoyed it.
The movie’s plot is captivating. The previous movie in the Cars franchise focused on racing and achieving your goals, but the sequel is more complex. There are two plot threads that unravel parallel to one another throughout the film. One is focused on Finn McMissile, a British Intelligence car sent to look for the missing detective Leland Turbo. In his detective mission, he stumbles upon the evil professor Zündapp. At the same time, Lightning McQueen returns to Radiator Springs having won another Piston Cup while racing in America. He and his team are invited to participate in the World Grand Prix alongside the best racers in the world, such as Italian Francesco Bernoulli, French Raoul ÇaRoule, and British Lewis Hamilton. The specific requirement of the race is that the participants are asked to race with allenol natural fuel that was discovered by entrepreneur Miles Axelrod. At first, these two plots seem independent of one another; however, as the film progresses, they converge to form an extravagant plot twist.
What is truly amazing is that this movie is very absorbing both for children and for older audiences due to its complexity. The supporting voice actors are a real highlight. The actor voicing British car Lewis Hamilton is, in fact, the real-life F1 driver Lewis Hamilton. This decision adds a more realistic touch to the races in the movie. Without a doubt another reason why I loved the movie is the fact that it has very sophisticated animations, especially in the racing scenes which perfectly encapsulate both the speed and dynamics of a race alongside with the emotions. The movie is also filled with dynamic detective scenes filled with explosions, fighting and escaping. All of them combined make this movie a true masterpiece.
Another thing I really enjoyed was the role of Mater in the movie. He is a humorous character, whose lack of understanding helps to unravel the mystery. Without a doubt he is the best character in the entire franchise. In Cars 2 he also becomes a detective as he fools both Holley Shiftwell and Finn McMissile into believing that he is an American spy.
Although some say the movie is sometimes too complex to be understood by the audience, and I have to admit that I had to rewatch this film a couple of times to understand the convoluted plot, I would not say that this is such a big issue. I believe that Cars 2 is by far one of the best animated films I have ever seen. The plot is fantastic, perfectly integrating both the detective and racing topic together. Without a doubt I would recommend this movie to everybody who is a fan of action films.
